Shoo Fly Pie

This recipe for Shoo Fly Pie is from Barbara Gordon's Great-grandmother Soder.

6 tbs shortning
1/2 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp baking soda.
1/2 cup boiling water
3/4 cup New Orleans molasses
1/2 tsp vinegar.

Mix shortening, sugar, salt, and flower altogether and take out a good 1/2 cup for the crumb topping.

Dissolve 1 level tsp soda in 1/2 cup boiling water. Add 3/4 cup New Orleans molasses and 1/2 tsp vinegar. Mix with the dry ingredients. Bake in an unbaked pie crust. Put crumbs on top. (Would be better with more crumbs).

Bake 35 minutes in 350 oven.

Makes 1 medium-sized 8 + 1/2 inch and 1 small pie or 1 large 10 inch pie.
